Remember being a child and doing something you thought really worthy, exciting, something that made you feel happy, pleased with yourself?
Like a drawing, and then you show it to an adult, or a teacher who proceeds to criticise, belittle and pick fault.
I was reminded of this today.
And then the following came to mind-
HAD I the heavens’ embroidered cloths,
Enwrought with golden and silver light,
The blue and the dim and the dark cloths
Of night and light and the half light,
I would spread the cloths under your feet:
But I, being poor, have only my dreams;
I have spread my dreams under your feet;
Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.
W.B. Yeats (1865–1939)
“He Wishes For the Cloths of Heaven”
So lets remind ourselves to encourage rather than embarrass, inspire rather than intimidate, delight in rather than dismiss.
And if you can’t say something nice, you can…..(see above photograph)
