Today’s good thing was a visit to my studio by Sophie and Rich.
Rich has a tattoo on his back, something he got in Thailand, and he showed it to Laura and I.
This led to a discussion about tattoos and the classic ‘What are you going to do when you’re old?” question that the tattooed generally get from the non-tattooed.
This question suggests that at some point in our lives we will ‘wake up’ to discover we are ashamed at the folly of your youth.
It also suggests that at some point in the future we will grow up, become respectable, wise up, and be stuck covered forever in permanent drawings that we got before we had wisdom descend upon us.
Kind of like when you reach say, 65 or 70, we suddenly sift through our past and look for shameful/embarrassing/regretful incidences/actions and come to the realisation that tattooing was a major mistake.
I find the whole but what will you do when you’re old question boring to answer.
Tattoos have become so commonplace that by the time I’m old the question would be how come I DON’T have any tattoos.
Tattoos are no longer regretted faded-to-blue grim reapers up the hairy forearms of tradesmen or former merchant seamen.
Sometimes they’re art.
