Today’s good thing was a visit from 12 year old Sam (who loved this drawing) and his Mum.
'I love the detail in it,' Sam tells me after I ask him what it is that appeals to him so much.
'Do you have a print of it?' he says.
I tell him no, that it’s so big it can’t fit under a scanner.
Then Sam’s Mum tells me Sam has Aspergers.
Then, while Sam’s Mum goes to get some money from the cash point for the poster she is going to buy him, I tell Sam he can ask me any questions he likes.
'Where do you get your inspiration from?' he asks me.
I explain to him that I get ideas from things people say to me, internet radio, things that happen in my life.
'For example,' I say to him, 'this one here is about a falling out I had with somebody,'
And I talk him through this drawing.
Then I give him a book of details of drawings I had made, and an A4 print of this.
Then Sam’s Mum comes back with the £10 for the print and thanks me for talking to Sam.
'Maybe Sam could come up and show you some of his drawings one day?' Sam's Mum asks.
'Of course he can.' I say.
And then I give her my number and stand in the hallway outside my studio saying good bye and waving to them.
After they leave I think about my cousin’s child, a boy who also has Aspergers.
I think about the tiny models that as a child he used to make out of blu tack.
Miniature Star Wars characters of maybe 8cm high, so detailed that I remember one of them having fingernails.
